Today the students had their first experience with the Makey Makey kits. (http://makeymakey.com/) The kits are allow students to "turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It's a simple Invention Kit for Beginners and Experts doing art and engineering." The music and art teacher have already agreed to collaborate with the science lab to create an interactive project!

I can across this great lesson on the NASA website. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/teach/activity/touchdown/ This activity challenged the students to build a shock absorbing base that would allow 2 "astronauts" (ie marshmallows) to land safely on the ground. The students had limited supplies- drinking straws, miniature marshmallows, index cards which they could only affix to the bottom of their lander. The students tried several different structures and tested them. The initial goal was to build a lander that could land from a 1 foot and 2 foot height but soon we found ourselves standing on tables with the most successful landers falling from our 9 foot ceilings! |
